Tax Invoice vs Invoice — Malaysia Guide
Understand the difference and when each is required in Malaysia.
Invoice vs Tax Invoice — what's the difference?
In Malaysia, the terms are often used interchangeably — but they have a specific legal distinction:
- Invoice: A payment request from seller to buyer. Does not need to include SST details if you're not SST-registered.
- Tax Invoice: Required if you are SST-registered. Must include your SST registration number, the SST rate, and the SST amount on each applicable line item.
When do you need a tax invoice?
If your business is registered for Service Tax (turnover above RM 500,000 for most services) or Sales Tax (registered manufacturer), you must issue tax invoices to your B2B buyers so they can claim input tax credits.
What about e-Invoices (MyInvois)?
MyInvois e-invoices are a separate requirement from SST. A compliant MyInvois document includes all tax invoice fields plus 30+ additional LHDN-required fields.
